My pendant is designed to hang above a kitchen island. Kitchen spaces play an important role for socialising, cooking and working at home. Lighting features are a major factor in creating and enhancing a warm, welcoming atmosphere. My design brings purpose to a modern open plan kitchen environment, to enhance a kitchen island in a practical sense, where people tend to gravitate. It’s designed to create ambience and bring functionality through lighting. The round, curvy shape of the overall pendant contrasts the sharp, boxy edges of the typical modern kitchen.
My pendant is inspired by a hydrangea flower, selected to bring the backyard flora inside the home, so the beautiful aesthetics of the flower can be enjoyed year round. The petal-like aspect of the design hidden inside forms another layer of depth to the pendant. The inner details directly on the main structure of the lamp creates a woven effect on the outside of the shade when the light is off. Only when the light is on, the details in the petal shapes spread over the inner layer are visible through subtle, delicate shadows, replicating the aesthetics of a hydrangea flower. Restricting shadows produced throughout the room means the pendant doesn’t take away from the crisp, modern kitchen aesthetics, while still having a positive effect on the space. Producing direct light to the bench below the pendant provides optimum light for everyday activities at the island. The design is versatile and can easily be extended to other shapes and sizes to fit the space and environment.
